Our Mission
At Inman’s Black German Shepherds, we are dedicated to breeding exceptional dogs that exemplify the best traits of the German Shepherd breed. Our goal is to provide families with loyal, intelligent, and friendly dogs. We breed only the old line of East Working Line DDR. DDR German Shepherds — also called East German Shepherds — are a distinct line of the German Shepherd breed developed in East Germany (Deutsche Demokratische Republik, DDR) after World War II.
🐕 Origin & History
After WWII, Germany was divided into East and West. The DDR government established strict breeding programs for working dogs, particularly for military and border patrol use.
The VEB Polizeihundschule (People’s Police Dog School) controlled breeding. Only dogs that met exacting standards for health, structure, and temperament were bred.
The line remained genetically isolated for decades, creating a very consistent type of working German Shepherd.
🧠 Temperament & Working Ability
High drive, high intelligence: DDR Shepherds are known for intense focus and trainability.
Calm and stable under pressure: They were bred to be courageous and loyal but not reactive.
Protective but balanced: With proper training, they make excellent police, military, or personal protection dogs.
Bond strongly with their handlers: They often work best with one primary person.
⚕️ Health
The DDR’s breeding program emphasized health and utility over looks, resulting in fewer issues like hip dysplasia than in some show lines.
Modern DDR-line breeders often continue those health standards, but quality varies depending on breeder ethics and selection.
🏡 Modern DDR Lines
After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, the DDR program dissolved, but enthusiasts preserved the bloodlines.
Today, you’ll find DDR or DDR-influenced Shepherds mainly in working-line kennels—often used for:
Police and military work
Search and rescue
Protection sports (Schutzhund/IGP)
Loyal family companions (for active, experienced owners)

They need structure, training, and daily mental + physical exercise.
